Zelma Leon Winchester

Zelma Leon (Peyton) Winchester, 96, born on November 1, 1927, in Bethlehem, Henry County, Kentucky to the late Lee Peyton, Sr. and Anna Laura (Hackett) Peyton, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024, in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. She leaves behind a legacy that touches the hearts of many through her dedication to education and her community.

Zelma devoted an impressive 36 years of her life to teaching within the Henry County Public Schools, where she inspired countless students. Her career included the roles of reading teacher at Eastern Grade School and English teacher at New Castle School. She believed deeply in the power of knowledge and the importance of kindness, often reminding those around her, "put a smile on your face and be nice to everyone."

In addition to her teaching career, Zelma was actively involved in various community organizations. She served as a 4-H leader and played a crucial role as an organizer of the Henry County Historical Society. Her commitment extended to the Henry County Homemakers and Rebekah Lodge. Notably, she was honored with the title of Kentucky Colonel, acknowledging her service and dedication to the state.  Zelma also served as assistant postmaster at the Bethlehem Post Office for over 30 years.

Zelma had a rich and fulfilling life beyond her professional endeavors. She was a devoted member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church where she was actively involved with church missions. She cherished her hobbies, which included playing the piano, solving crossword puzzles, engaging in needlepoint, and indulging her love for reading. Through these activities, she found joy and creativity that further enriched her life.

Zelma is survived by two daughters, Adonna Lee (Steve) Florence of Mt. Washington, KY, and Melinda Ann Spear of Pleasureville, KY. She adored her five grandchildren: Michael Chad McAllister, Brittany Leigh Spear, Clifton Curtis Florence, Patrick Orey Spear, and Jenna Lee Florence. Additionally, she was blessed with five great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her spirit.

Zelma was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Winchester, two daughters, Sandra K. Winchester and Carla Jill Winchester, and two brothers, Lee Peyton, Jr. and Cecil Curtis Peyton. Her memory will live on through the lives she touched and the values she instilled in her family and community.

Visitation will be held on October 11, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at Sholar-Riley Funeral Home, located at 5710 Castle Hwy, Pleasureville, KY 40057. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Zelma's remarkable life and the legacy of love and kindness that she leaves behind.
