Mary Catherine O'connell Hughes

Mary Catherine O'Connell Hughes, age 99, of Pleasureville, passed away peacefully of natural causes, surrounded by her family, at home on Saturday, June 4, 2022. She was born on May 20, 1923, in Frankfort, KY, to James Russell O'Connell and Mary Catherine O'Neil O'Connell, and was the oldest of ten children. She was a devoted member of St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church. She graduated from Bald Knob High School and attended Fugazzi Business College. She loved her large family, enjoyed family gatherings, reunions and any opportunity to be with her family and friends. She was admired and so loved by all. She was the family historian and spent hours researching genealogy and writing the family history. She loved her flower gardens, tomatoes and enjoyed canning.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo Wasko (Don) of Georgetown, IN; a son, Paul Hughes (Kelly) of Shelbyville, KY; two sisters: Margaret Dailey of Carrollton & Eileen Riley of South Bend, IN; one brother, Joe O'Connell of Frankfort; Six grandchildren: Tim Gordon & Julie Gordon of Frankfort; Michelle Donley of Eminence; Colin Hughes & Colleen Hughes of Shelbyville; and Kevin (Nancy) Wasko of Louisville; Fourteen great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd Hughes; her daughter, Martha Hughes Gordon; her siblings: Dorothy Chwalek, Jim O'Connell, Betty Barnes, Pat O'Connell, Gerald O'Connell and George O'Connell.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church, Eminence, KY. Father David Sanchez will officiate. Burial will be at Defoe Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, June 13, 2022, from 2 pm to 7 pm, at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville, KY. Recitation of the rosary will be at 4 pm.

Pallbearers for her service will be her grandchildren.
